There are four types of abortion:
- Vacuum aspiration is a procedure that sucks the embryo out of the uterus. Must be done early in the pregnancy.
- A 'D&C', short for dilation and curettage, is a procedure for scraping out the lining of the uterus. Can be used when a women is more than 12 weeks pregnant.
- Medical abortion is a procedure where pregnancy is induced as in labour.
- RU-486 is a drug that makes the embryo leave the uterus (womb) from the lining of the uterus. Must be started within 63 days from the last menstrual period. Currently only licensed in Britain, China, France and Sweden.
Never try to have an illegal abortion or try to perform an abortion by yourself (eg. taking pills or sticking things up your uterus). You can seriously injure or kill yourself.
There are about 1.5 million abortions performed each year.
